Action type!

Erik van Blokland

Den Haag, NL

Although technical aspects like rendering and hinting currently take center stage in the general discourse, this presentation sheds a different light on the actual developments: Erik van Blokland predicts that typography, not rendering esoterica, will determine the direction of type design for the web. Fonts are able to play an active part in interaction and animation. Webfont technology can be used to make the type respond and act.
If true, this vision will largely change the design of type: degrees of movement, meaningful changes in proportion and shape, while keeping track of undesired effects. Erik van Blokland takes a closer look at those new requirements and illustrates how action can be a type design principle.
